Supporting Canberra’s transition to a smarter, more sustainable future

Omexom Australia’s Sustainable Cities Business Unit is delivering one of Australia’s largest smart public lighting programmes, helping the ACT Government modernise its street lighting network while supporting its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2045.

Building on more than seven years of successful delivery, our team continues to maintain over 80,000 public lighting assets across the ACT while upgrading existing lighting infrastructure with energy-efficient smart LED technology. Following the successful completion of more than 50,000 LED lighting upgrades, Omexom has been awarded a renewed maintenance contract and a further 16,000 smart lighting upgrades, continuing the Territory’s transition to a smarter, lower-carbon future.

Building Australia's leading Smart City

The ACT Government required a long-term delivery partner capable of modernising an ageing public lighting network while maintaining safe, reliable operation across the Territory.

The programme needed to reduce energy consumption, improve maintenance efficiency and create a connected lighting network that could support future smart city technologies without disrupting essential public services.

Omexom Australia provides end-to-end delivery of the ACT’s smart lighting programme, including:

  • Maintenance of more than 80,000 public lighting assets
  • LED lighting upgrades across the Territory
  • Smart lighting technology integration
  • Fault response and ongoing maintenance
  • Asset management and network performance monitoring
  • Installation and commissioning of connected lighting infrastructure
  • Long-term programme delivery and optimisation

By combining extensive field delivery capability with smart technology integration, we are helping build the digital infrastructure required for the cities of tomorrow.

The programme is delivering measurable benefits for both the ACT Government and the Canberra community, including:

  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Improved public lighting reliability
  • Faster identification and rectification of faults
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Improved public safety and visibility
  • Better outcomes for wildlife through reduced light spill and darker skies
  • A connected platform for future smart city technologies

The ACT Smart Lighting Program is about more than replacing lights.

The upgraded network provides the foundation for future smart city applications that can improve the way Canberra operates, including:

  • Adaptive lighting and dynamic dimming
  • Traffic counting and monitoring
  • Electric vehicle charging
  • Smart parking
  • Air quality monitoring
  • Water quality monitoring
  • Waste management sensors
  • Incident detection
  • AI-driven analytics and infrastructure insights

By leveraging connected infrastructure and intelligent data, the network can evolve to support more efficient public services, improve sustainability and provide greater visibility across the city’s assets.
