Sustainable LED Conversions Transform Public Lighting

For more than a decade, Omexom Australia’s Urban Lighting team has been delivering a smarter, more sustainable approach to public lighting upgrades through its innovative LED conversion program.

Rather than replacing entire lanterns when upgrading outlawed mercury vapour and high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, the team developed a method to retrofit existing fittings with modern LED technology. By retaining much of the existing infrastructure, upgrades can often be completed in a single visit, reducing waste, minimising disruption and improving efficiency.

Since 2015, the team has converted more than 7,400 streetlights across Victoria, delivering upgrades in local communities as well as landmark locations including the MCG precinct and Flagstaff Gardens.

The long-term environmental and operational benefits have been significant, with the program delivering:

  • More than 7,430 LED lantern conversions
  • Approximately 1.3 million tonnes of CO₂ energy savings
  • Around 35,943 tonnes of CO₂ transport-related savings through fewer site visits
  • Improved safety by reducing manual handling and time spent working at height
  • Approximately 150 tonnes of CO₂ savings through reduced recycling and material waste

The initiative demonstrates how practical engineering innovation can extend the life of existing infrastructure while improving safety, reducing environmental impact and delivering greater value for customers and communities.
