Sustainable Cities partners with government and infrastructure owners to deliver smarter, greener and more connected communities.

Our Sustainable Cities Business Unit uses technology and innovation to help create a more sustainable, connected, inclusive and safe Canberra. With the right infrastructure, strong community support, ambitious emissions-reduction targets and a commitment to renewable energy, Canberra is well positioned to become a leader in smart and sustainable cities.

In the ACT, our team maintains more than 80,000 public lighting assets and supports the Territory’s transition towards net zero emissions by 2045. Over the past seven years, we have delivered more than 50,000 LED lighting upgrades, reducing energy consumption across the streetlighting network by 50.91%.

Following the renewal of our maintenance contract and the award of a further 16,000 lighting upgrades, these savings will continue to grow as older, energy-intensive lights are replaced with efficient LED technology. We also support broader environmental initiatives through responsible recycling practices and our involvement with the Canberra Environment Centre.

Backed by the global expertise of VINCI Energies, our capabilities extend beyond lighting to connected technologies that improve safety, efficiency, sustainability and community outcomes. Together, these solutions are helping the ACT enhance public spaces and unlock the benefits of smart city infrastructure.

What we deliver

  • Upgrade, maintain and manage connected LED and Smart public lighting networks and infrastructure that improve energy efficiency, reliability and asset visibility.
  • Meshed communications equipment and connected public assets that create the foundation for future city services. This allows us to monitor and control the infrastructure and easily introduce new capability
  • Integration of sensors and intelligent technologies including traffic monitoring, environmental monitoring, EV charging, smart parking, incident detection and connected asset management.
  • Using real-time data, analytics and AI to improve decision making, identify trends, optimise infrastructure performance and support long-term planning.

How we support the Canberra Community

  • Reduce energy use, carbon emissions and light pollution through efficient public lighting, smart controls and dark sky principles.
  • Support the ACT’s transition to net zero emissions by 2045, its 100% renewable electricity supply and the continued growth of electric vehicles and transport electrification.
  • Use infrastructure data to understand community needs, identify emerging risks and provide government with practical solutions for smarter lighting, traffic management and long-term planning.
  • Help strengthen Canberra’s climate resilience by considering the National Climate Risk Assessment 2025 and supporting the protection of green corridors and the natural environment.
  • Promote community education and involvement by sharing key sustainability outcomes, including energy savings, carbon reductions and other measurable benefits.
  • Support Canberra’s circular economy and local environmental initiatives through green-powered operations, responsible recycling of lighting components, copper and eligible containers, and involvement with the Canberra Environment Centre.
