Smart lighting LED and Felicity Traffic AID Camaras Upgrade

From 2018, the ACT Sustainable Cities BU has upgraded to LED Lights in Canberra ACT instead of old lamps SOX and CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) Post Top. These old lights trace amounts of heavy metals such as Mercury, requiring specialized disposal to prevent environmental contamination. CFLs have a shorter lifespan, use more energy and are less efficient compared to LED technologies resulting in more frequent replacements and higher disposal. The ACT upgrade includes installing Smart and PE cells to enhance data capture, automation and streamline maintenance activities across the BU. The program focused on major ACT motorways, targeting the largest and least efficient lights to reduce energy costs and emissions.

From 2025 SC BU has progressively continued to upgrade residential areas with part of the contract including the implementation of Felicity AI cameras with sensors that collect traffic data at strategic and critical points across the urban network. The system provides 24/7/365 monitoring of key zones and can trigger real time alerts or commands to traffic management systems, supporting accident prevention as well as dimming lights when traffic flow is at a minimum thus further saving energy for the Canberra residents.

Felicity Traffic AID cameras monitor zones where light traffic meets heavy traffic, monitors near-miss or incident detection based on site specific parameters can provide command a 3rd-party actuation once a safety initiative is identified.
All these initiatives aim to improve the lives of the Canberra community by reducing energy usage, reducing pollution, improve safety of the community and provide improved movement across the ACT.
